Three moments from his life
Rabbi Yisrael Meir published his first book anonymously in Vilna. It taught the art of guarding one's words. Yet its own words—Chafetz Chaim, the title—would become the name by which its author was remembered.
A small grocery supported the family in Radin. His wife ran the shop; he kept the accounts. Alongside the books he wrote were the books he balanced.
A carefully wrapped black coat, the story goes, accompanied him on his travels. It remained unworn: he was saving it to greet the Messiah, and wanted to have it ready whenever that day arrived.
