Three stories of the Old City
The walls around the Old City today were built by order of the Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Within them, on less than one square kilometre, lie four quarters and narrow lanes like the one in this painting.
British governor Ronald Storrs ruled that every new building in Jerusalem must be faced with dressed natural stone. That is why the whole city is built of Jerusalem stone, which changes its hue with the light.
Naomi Shemer's "Jerusalem of Gold" was first sung three weeks before the Six-Day War. Her song of sunset light on the city's stones became the anthem of a generation.
