For thousands of years people have come to Rachel's Tomb, on the road to Bethlehem, to pray and to ask. The painting is washed in soft light, like a prayer being answered.

Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin on the road to Ephrath, and Jacob set a pillar on her grave, "the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day" (Genesis 35).
In Jeremiah's dayRachel Weeping
Tradition holds that Jacob buried her by the roadside so she could pray for her children as they passed into exile. Jeremiah wrote: "Refrain your voice from weeping… your children shall return to their own border."
1841Montefiore
Sir Moses Montefiore restored the building, added an entrance hall and secured the key for the Jewish community. In recent generations women wind a red thread around the tomb, as a blessing and a prayer.
