Seder Ha’Avoda

By Galit Cohen

Oil on canvas

95 × 110 cm · Ships rolled

Seder Ha’Avoda, a dignified portrayal of the Cohen Gadol, radiating holiness, presence, and ancient spiritual majesty.

Once a year, on Yom Kippur, the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies alone. For seven days he prepared for that moment. Over his heart he wore the breastplate with twelve stones, one for each tribe, as if the whole people walked in with him. When he spoke the sacred Name, everyone standing in the Temple courtyard bowed to the ground. And when he came out in peace, they all walked him home in joy. To this day, the Yom Kippur prayers say: "How glorious was the High Priest as he came out of the Holy of Holies in peace."

The story behind the painting

Three moments from Yom Kippur

  1. Seven days beforeThe Preparation

Seven days before Yom Kippur, the High Priest left his home for a chamber in the Temple to prepare for the service.

  2. Yom KippurThe Holy Name

When the High Priest spoke the Holy Name, everyone in the courtyard bowed and answered "Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom forever." It was the one day a year he entered the Holy of Holies.

  3. To this dayIn the Musaf Prayer

With no Temple, the service lives on in words. Every Yom Kippur, synagogues recite the Seder HaAvodah in the Musaf prayer and bow where the people once bowed.
