Three moments from his life
Jerusalem, 1924From Baghdad
He was four when his family left Baghdad for Jerusalem and made their home in the Beit Yisrael neighborhood. In the city he loved, a young boy set out on a path of Torah that would last a lifetime.
1970Israel Prize
The State of Israel awarded him the Israel Prize for Torah literature, honoring both the depth and the breadth of his writing, foremost among it the responsa of Yabia Omer.
1973–1983Rishon LeZion
For ten years he served as Israel's Sephardi Chief Rabbi, bearing the title Rishon LeZion. His guiding words were "to restore the crown to its former glory": returning Sephardi tradition to its place of honor.
